Advocacy Alert: Paycheck Fairness Vote & CEDAW Hearings

16Nov10

Congress has started the lame-duck session and landmark actions on key women’s issues are just days away!

Hadassah is joining our coalition partners for a Paycheck Fairness Act Call-In Day TODAY, November 16. With just days before the Senate votes, we must take every opportunity to ensure that our Senators stand up for women and families. Remember, advocacy efforts are placing particular focus on Senators Scott Brown from Massachusetts, Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins from Maine, and newly-elected Senators Chris Coons from Delaware and Joe Manchin from West Virginia.

Call your Senators at 1-877-667-6650 and urge them to pass the Paycheck Fairness Act this week! Here are a few key talking points when contacting your Senators and local newspapers, or for bulletins, Facebook, Twitter or other social media:

  • Women currently only make 77 cents to a man’s dollar
  • The Paycheck Fairness Act would deter wage discrimination by closing loopholes in the Equal Pay Act and bar retaliation against workers who disclose their wages to coworkers
  • The House already passed the bill in January 2009
  • The Senate must do the same this session and protect against any weakening amendments that arise

In other exciting news, this Thursday, November 18, the Senate will hold a hearing on the U.S. ratification of CEDAW for the first time in EIGHT years. CEDAW, the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women, was adopted by the United National General Assembly in 1979 and has since been signed by all but seven countries worldwide. As a vocal advocate for CEDAW’s ratification and a member of the CEDAW Taskforce, Hadassah drafted a statement of testimony which will be submitted to the Congressional Record during the hearing.

Presenters for the hearing include actor Geena Davis, founder of The Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media; Wazhma Frogh from the Afghan Women’s Network; and Marcia Greenberger, Co-President of the National Women’s Law Center, among others. You can watch the streaming webcast at 2 p.m. on the Senate Judiciary website or follow along via live tweets from @CEDAW2010.
