Hadassah Southern California Honors Miriam Bent

by Eileen Sondak

Honoring Miriam Bent was a pleasure for the 140 guests who gathered at the Westin Mission Hills March 18 at a gala given by Hadassah Southern California.

Bent has done so much for the desert’s growing Jewish community that it could fill a book! This talented woman graduated from the University of California, Berkeley, with a degree in criminology and worked as a probation officer. That’s not exactly the training one would need to write one of the most delicious columns in the desert, “Have a Nosh with Miriam” which Bent writes and readers look forward to reading during the Jewish holidays.

From kugel to kreplach, her recipes have become classics. A desert resident since 1983, she served as president of the Sabra Group and the Coachella Valley Chapter of Hadassah. She has been the editor of the Palm Springs Jewish Federations Jewish Community News since 1994.

In addition to honoring Bent, the gala also gave guests the opportunity to purchase art by Barbara Mittelmann in a silent auction to benefit, in part, Hadassah. Mittelmann is known for her illustrations of famous sports personalities, which are exhibited in private collections and in the NFL Hall of Fame.
