Hadassah National News:

On February 20-23, Hadassah joined hundreds of Jewish leaders from across the United States at the 2010 Jewish Council for Public Affairs (JCPA) Plenum in Dallas, Texas. The theme of the plenum was “B’Yachad: Building Bridges – Acting Together”, which highlights working together and building relationships with friends in the Jewish community and beyond.

Over the course of three days, plenum delegates discussed and heard from experts on topics such as “civility” among the Jewish community and its interfaith partners, human rights in Africa and the devastation in Haiti, how to nurture respectful dialogue on Israel, the connections between health care and Jewish values, religion in public schools, and partnerships with Christian Zionists.

The 2010 Plenum featured a variety of prominent and influential educators, journalists, diplomats, religious leaders, and community activists. Highlighted speakers included Israel’s Ambassador to the United States, Michael B. Oren, who discussed the latest issues involving Israel’s security and peace in the Middle East; the U.S. State Department’s Special Envoy to Monitor and Combat Anti-Semitism, Hannah Rosenthal, who joined the Anti-Defamation League’s National Director, Abe Foxman, in a discussion on the state of global anti-Semitism; and former U.S. Secretary for Housing and Urban Development, Henry Cisneros, who addressed delegates on the current state of poverty in America.

Hadassah led the way in the sponsorship and adoption of a JCPA resolution on breast cancer awareness and treatment. The resolution, which passed in the Tuesday morning resolutions session, calls for legislation, health measures, and early education to reduce the risk of breast cancer and provide assistance to individuals who have been diagnosed with the disease. Breast cancer is a top issue for Hadassah, as the Hadassah University Medical Center in Israel works to improve screening techniques as well as find a cure via its pioneering human embryonic stem cell and genetic research. In the U.S., Hadassah is actively involved in educating women about breast cancer through its breast health awareness program, Check It Out®.
